BUEA--Some 14 student leaders of the University of Buea accused of acts of indiscipline boycotted a disciplinary panel last week, describing it as incompetent and against university rules.

The chairman of the University of Buea Student Council Arrey Bissong blamed the Vice Chancellor Prof Vincent Titanji of trying to settle personal scores and led the campaign to boycott the disciplinary panel.

Authorities said the students were guilty of “gross acts of indiscipline” including spearheading unrest. The UB administration is trying the students following a dispute the erupted on 11 February 2009, said Mr Bissong.

The students said they have complained to the ministry of higher education and will only subject themselves to a disciplinary panel after hearing from the minister Prof Jacques Fame Ndongo.

There were fears of unrests ahead in the very inflamable institution, which has witnessed deadly riots in the past. Authorities and students leaders were still unwilling to make concessions at the weekend.
