YAOUNDE—Two government ministers made donations to survivors of the 1986 Lake Nyos gas disaster in Wum on Monday.
It was the first major action by the government since the disaster, following years of allegations of neglect by the survivors. Some 1500 people died when gas from the hilltop lake swept across the valley nearly wiping off an entire village in August 1986. The disaster was blamed on the sudden release of poisonous gas that had been trapped at the bottom of the lake but locals feared a criminal hand was involved. Over the years, the government has been trying with other development partners to degas the lake following evidence of new gas accumulations. Experts fear that the lake posed more danger this time from the possible collapse of one of the walls holding the over 200-metre column of water. The ministers of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation and of Scientific Research used their visit to Wum to evaluate work to make the lake safe. Hundreds took part in a public event to handout gifts in Wum, one of the towns that received the first survivors when the disaster struck.
