BAMENDA—Municipal authorities here have given public transporters 30 days to quit illegal departure and arrival points and relocate to the various municipal bus stations across the town. The government delegate and mayors of the three Bamenda sub divisional councils took the decision at a meeting last Wednesday, intended to redress the chaos that reigns in the transport sector here. Loading and unloading will henceforth take place at the Bamenda I municipal bus station in Bamendankwe, the Bamenda II bus stations at Ntatru, Nitop or Mawatsu and the Bamenda III bus station at Mile 4 Nkwen, depending on the destination of the transporters. Defaulters face a fine of CFA 25,000, according to the municipal authorities. All transporters moving out of the Bamenda City Council area must pay access tickets at various sub-divisional council check-points in conformity with the regulations in force. The decision came barely two weeks after the government delegate to the Bamenda City Council, Vincent Ndumu Nji, started implementing the December 31st 2008 prime ministerial decree laying down conditions for motorcycle business in Cameroon. Commercial motorcycle riders commonly known here as Okadamen in Bamenda now put on lemon-green jackets as primary identification. According to Ndumu, motorcycle riders will subsequently be expected to acquire a number of documents before plying the streets of the city. The documents include rider's license, an insurance attestation, bike registration plates and identification badges to be eligible for the business." he said. The measures are geared towards instilling order in the sector which before now was totally unchecked with several road accidents and motorcycle-aided crimes recorded almost on a daily basis. The implementation of the regulation exercise is ensured by the Bamenda City Council Police.
