BAMENDA—City authorities here started tearing down makeshift stalls Monday, in an operation similar to that which has changed the face of Yaounde.Huge metal containers that have been serving as shops were lifted from the city’s business district at the end of a three-month notice of quit issued to owners. The reasons for the operation were not immediately clear but it appeared to be part of a programme to clean up Bamenda announced by government delegate Vincent Ndumu. President Paul Biya is due to visit the town in the coming weeks and our correspondents said many believed the operations was also linked to the visit. The Commercial Avenue, where most of the teardown took place is likely to host an event to mark 50 years of the army. Monday, traders climbed onto rooftops and battled against time to save what they could of roofing material as small cranes and trucks moved from one stall to the other. The operation has raised anger among victims who say they have been put out of work and left without a source of livelihood. No site has been set yet for their relocation. Bamenda is one of the country’s fastest growing cities with around two million people. The jump in demographics over the past years has led to the chaotic setting up of business stalls around the main market and commercial centre. Ndumu announced when he took up office that he was going to demolish makeshift structures that now dot the city as a way to give the town a makeover.
