YAOUNDE—Art works from around the country have gone on display at the City Hall here, where the second edition of the Cameroon International Handicraft Fair, SIARC, is underway.

SIARC is a promotional strategy adopted by the government to enable painters, weavers, potters, carvers and other craftspeople to meet and exhibit their works.

The fair, which runs through 31 January, is the culmination of the regional handicraft fairs that were held in the various regional chief towns towards the end of 2009.

The opening ceremony featured many visitors from America, Europe and Asia as well as nationals. It is open everyday until late evening.

Chairing the inaugural on Friday 22 January, the minister of small and medium size enterprises, Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, told artists that this edition of the fair marked a new dawn in the sector.

“Government’s objective is to modernise the sector,” he said.

“An international crafts centre is near completion in Yaounde while Douala, Bamenda and Garoua will soon see theirs.”

Etoundi Ngoa also said plans were underway for similar structures to be set up in Bertoua, Ngaoundere and Ebolowa.

SIARC came on the wake of the regional summit of handicrafts ministers, CODEPA, held here on 21 January at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel.

Chairmanship of the organisation moved from Cameroon’s Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa to the handicrafts minister of the Republic Congo.
