YAOUNDE—Javier Clemente has officially taken over the Cameroon national football team as head coach, with a promise to restore the country’s lost shape.

Clemente and his assistant Francois Omam Biyick signed contracts with Cameroon football officials in Yaounde Saturday.

The two fly of to Europe Sunday where the Indomitable Lions are camping ahead of an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with Mauritius on September 4.

Clemente is assigned to qualify Cameroon for AFCON 2012 and win it, according to terms in his two-year contract.

Cameroon put up a poor show during the 2010 African tournament and was a shadow of itself months after at the South Africa FIFA World Cup.

“Cameroon is a great team… if we have the public and the media with us, it is possible to win a lot of matches,” Clemente told reporters.
