Police in the south western town of Buea have charged a lawyer defending suspected Anglophone separatists with secession. Barrister Blaise Berinyuy was arrested from his home today by the South West judicial police chief accompanied by a truckload of at least 20 officers. He was charged with trying to split the country after showing up in court the day before with a flag, which police described as that of the Southern Cameroons. He was released after scores of lawyers stormed the police station in protest over the arrest. Berinyuy reserved his statement for the court and refused to answer further police questions, he told us by telephone. His one line statement was crossed signed by the president of the Cameroon Bar Council barrister Etta Bessong, he said. The incident came days after police rounded off nearly 150 suspected activists who have all been charged with secession. Their prosecution was due to begin on Monday, with Beringyu as part of the defence team, but the state was not ready. They were still in custody Thursday. Beringyu admitted carrying a Southern Cameroons flag in his car. He said it was an exhibit for their case. The Southern Cameroon’s National Council has been fighting for the independence of Cameroon’s two Anglophone regions for years. Every year on October 1, the anniversary of the reunification of the English and French speaking parts of Cameroon, they carry out events, including hoisting the S. Cameroons flag. Police arrested hundreds of activists after they tried to hold a banned rally on October 1.
