A Dutchman and an Austrian were selected from among over 200 applicants for the top jobs of general manager and chief operations officer. President Paul Biya made public the decision, which paves the way for the cooperation to take flight in a decree last Thursday. Camair-co replaces the defunct Cameroon Airlines, Camair. Authorities said late last year that picking the management team and other crew members was the last major step to its take off. Alex Van Elk, the new director general, worked with private airways Arik Air, which is based in Nigeria before his appointment. He also has experience managing airports in Nigeria and has been successful in starting new airlines. The chief of operations Gustav Baldauf formerly held the same position at Rusia-owned AiRUnion, an airline group comprising KrasAir, Domodedovo Airlines, Samara Airlines, Omskavia and Sibaviatrans. Cameroon began the search for a management team for Camair in 2009, when partner Lufthansa Consulting issued a call for applications. About 200 people, including 12 Cameroonians applied for the job, according to the ministry of finance. Elk’s brings a warehouse of expertise and visibly good accomplishments to the position. He helped build Arik Air, which he inherited as a national company, into an international operation, with destinations to the USA and Europe. Working for Bi-Courtney Aviation Services in 2008, Elk won a contract to build a monorail at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, to ease traffic problems on the road linking the airport’s domestic and international terminals. The Camair management was already set to go to a foreigner. Gilbert Mitonneau, a French man who first occupied the position stepped down in 2009, citing difficulty to work with certain people on his team. Comments (4)
