Yaounde—At least 45 people were confirmed dead after a passenger bus crashed north west of the capital Yaounde, killing most people on board. Officials suspect the driver dosed off during the night journey and lost control of the speeding vehicle at a sharp bend at Etoundou, a village in the Bafia district. The bus overturned several times and landed in a ditch where it broke in two, said highway police, who expected the death toll to rise sharply. There were about 60 people onboard. Accidents are common on the highway, which links the cities of Yaounde and Baffoussam, and forms part of what is often referred to as the triangle of death because of its high annual accident toll.
