Cameroon lost around three trillion francs as a result of corruption during a six year period, according to a rare estimate of the cost of corruption by the national anti-corruption commission (NACC).

Cameroon is considered one of the most corrupt countries in the world but a crackdown started in 2006 has failed to reduce the practice, which is partly responsible for weak levels of investment in the country. NACC is one of several bodies created to promote a corruption-free Cameroon. It launched Cameroon’s first ever national anti-corruption strategy last week, seeking to create a nation of integrity by 2015. According to notes in the strategy document, the state lost was cheated by more than CFA1.8 trillion to corruption between 1998 and 2004. Most of the loss was the result of illegal logging, which accounted for around CFA99.7 billion in lost revenue annually, NACC said. The estimate is easily modest, given the long tradition of corruption in Cameroon. NACC’s new strategy targets specific sectors like the public investment budget, public contracts, the customs, tax and treasury departments, among others. “By 2015, Cameroon is a country where integrity constitutes an essential value for every citizen, with an economic growth equitably distributed to ensure the social welfare of all in a preserved environment,” according to NACC documents.
