YAOUNDE--The number of deaths from a cholera outbreak in northern Cameroon has reached 170, the worst in ten years, health officials have said. Poor sanitation and water scarcity have been blamed for the spread of the disease, which is concentrated in the Far North region.Cholera cases rose to 2,266 from 2,078 two days ago according to the health ministry. The first case was reported last May 6. Cholera is a severe bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, which primarily affects the small intestine. The main symptoms include profuse watery diarrhea and vomiting. The disease is one of the most common causes of death throughout the world and in recorded human history.
