Two pipes to suck out lethal gas accumulations have been erected at Lake Nyos, as part of measures to pre-empt the 1986 gas disaster that killed more than 1.700 people and thousands of life stuck, the Institute of Geologic and Mining Research said on Tuesday, 22 March. French company Data Environnement constructed the pipes, said the Institute of Geological Research. Lake Chad is one of two lakes where the rare release of toxic gas has been reported in Cameroon.
